Preventing Cavitation in High-Head Industrial Pumps

Cavitation is the formation and subsequent collapse of vapor bubbles inside a pump. This phenomenon occurs when the local static pressure drops below the vapor pressure of the liquid being pumped.

When these bubbles flow to regions of higher pressure within the impeller, they implode violently. These micro-implosions generate micro-jets of water with pressures reaching up to 10,000 bar. This intense localized stress causes material fatigue, leading to the characteristic "gravel-pumping" sound, excessive vibration, and severe pitting damage on the impeller blades.

To prevent cavitation, engineers must calculate the Net Positive Suction Head Available (NPSHa) and ensure it exceeds the Net Positive Suction Head Required (NPSHr) by at least 1.5 meters safety margin.

Key remedies include: increasing the intake pipe diameter, minimizing bends and valves on the suction side, lowering the fluid temperature, elevating the feed tank, and performing weekly cleanouts of intake strainer baskets.
